Sentencing Postponed for Transform Now Plowshares Activists

Sentencing for the Transform Now Plowshares activists has been postponed until January 28.  Sr. Megan Rice, Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli were convicted of sabotage and destruction of government property at their jury trial in federal court in Knoxville, Tennessee last May, ten months after their disarmament action at the Y-12 nuclear weapons complex.  The three await sentencing in jail in Ocilla, Georgia.  They each face a possible maximum sentence of 35 years behind bars.  You can find addresses to write them a note of support here.  There is also still time to write a letter to the judge on their behalf.  Click here for more information.

Write a letter supporting PVT. Manning’s request for clemency

Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Convening Authorities are granted the power to reduce or eliminate a convicted soldier’s sentence.  They use this power when they feel the court martial failed to deliver justice.  As Commanding General of the Military District of Washington, Major General Jeffrey S. Buchanan is the only other individual besides President Obama with the power to ameliorate WikiLeaks whistle-blower PVT Manning’s sentence in the immediate future. The Support Committee are now requesting letters from professors, law experts, human rights advocates, politicians, artists, veterans, and concerned citizens.

22 blockaders arrested at AWE Burghfield

by Andreas Speck

Early in the morning of September 2, activists from all over Europe blockaded the two gates of AWE Burghfield, where Britain’s nuclear warheads are assembled and maintained. For almost an hour, all vehicle access to AWE Burghfield was blocked, until police cleared a lock-on blockade of six Finnish activists on The Mearings to the south of the main gate. Later, a blockade of Scottish activists and another blockade of Belgian activists were cleared to the east of AWE Burghfield, near construction gate.

Nine women chain shut Vermont Yankee gate

Making good on their promise to continue demonstrating at Entergy’s Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant until an uncontaminated green field stands in place of the still-operating nuclear reactor, on September 18 nine members of the Shut It Down Affinity Group chained themselves to the gate and spray painted the words “Shut It Down Today” on Entergy’s driveway.
