Mother’s Day action at U.S. Trident nuclear sub base

Eight activists, holding banners reading “The Earth is Our Mother, Treat Her With Respect” and “Nuclear Weapons are Immoral to Use, Immoral to Have, Immoral to Make,” briefly blocked all incoming traffic at nuclear submarine base Kitsap-Bangor in Silverdale, Washington as part of a May 13th Mother’s Day observance. Ranging in age from 29 to 89 years old, the group was removed from the highway by the Washington State Patrol, cited for violating RCW 46.61.250 (Pedestrians on Roadways) and released at the scene.

Nuclear resisters obstruct runway construction at German air base

On the morning of May 8, seven German war resisters disrupted preparation for nuclear war by obstructing construction work for a new runway at Büchel Air Base. The runway is a prerequisite for the deployment of new nuclear weapons that will soon be stationed at the base. The group was arrested and taken to the police station in Cochem before being released. They called on the German government to comply with international law and join the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Anti-nuclear power activists detained in Turkey

On April 27, two anti-nuclear activists and Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) parliamentary candidate Hakan Güneş were temporarily detained as they protested the delivery of nuclear fuel to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Mediterranean Mersin province. The three were later released. Protesters from all over Turkey were repeatedly stopped by law enforcement to have their identity checked on their way to the opening ceremony at the site.

Another American activist in German prison for nuclear weapons protest

A second U.S. citizen is serving prison time in Germany for protest actions demanding that U.S. nuclear bombs stationed at Germany’s Büchel NATO base be withdrawn. Dennis DuVall, 81 years old, began a 60-day sentence on March 23 (a month after American John LaForge completed his prison sentence). He will be released on Friday, May 19. Charged with trespass and damage to property, DuVall refused to pay a court-imposed fine, explaining that  “it is a matter of conscience I share with many other U.S., Dutch, and German Büchel defendants not to pay money to those who willingly protect weapons of mass murder deployed at Büchel NATO base.”

Arrests at two U.S. drone bases

CREECH AIR FORCE BASE

Three activists participating in this year’s Sacred Peace Walk in Nevada were arrested at Creech drone base on April 5: Loranell Breyley and Sylver Pondolfino for blocking the roadway into the base, and C.J. Preston for writing the word “drones” under the word “stop” on a stop sign at the entrance of the base. They were taken to the Clark County Detention Center, and later released.

On April 19, five anti-drone warfare activists – including three military veterans – were arrested shortly after dawn while blocking the entrance to the main gates of Holloman Air Force Base, site of the largest U.S. killer drone training program in the U.S. They were charged with misdemeanor obstruction of a roadway. The five were part of a group of protesters who spent a week protesting at the drone base near Alamagordo, New Mexico.

Good Friday arrests at Nevada test site

Eight activists from around the U.S. were arrested on Good Friday, April 7, at the Nevada nuclear test site calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. They were participants in Nevada Desert Experience’s week-long Sacred Peace Walk. The group was cited for trespass and released at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS, formerly the Nevada Test Site). They have the option of paying a $620 fine or appearing in Justice Court in Beatty, Nevada to contest the charge.

Military recruitment disrupted on university campus

Yelling “You have blood on your hands!” and “Fascist, racist all the way, U.S. Army go away!”, protesters disrupted a University of Michigan career fair in Ann Arbor on February 9, in solidarity with the movement to Stop Camp Grayling. They squirted red liquid “blood” on the tables of both the NSA (National Security Agency) and the U.S. Navy. Two of the protesters were tackled by police, arrested and charged with trespass. They were released a few hours later.

Four arrested for blockading UK’s Trident nuclear sub base

Four Faslane Peace Camp activists were arrested on April 5 after successfully locking themselves together in pairs during a heavy rain and blockading two gates at the Trident nuclear submarine base in Scotland. The group was protesting the U.K. government’s plans to provide depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion. They were taken to the Clydebank police station in handcuffs, and later released.
