Nine activists arrested at Creech Air Force Base

from Nevada Desert Experience

On April 1, nine members of the Nevada Desert Experience’s Sacred Peace Walk were arrested at Creech Air Force Base at approximately 7:20 a.m. Holding a banner that read “Active Duty and National Guard: You have a duty to Refuse Illegal Orders”, they blocked the road leading into the base to disrupt an illegal, immoral and murderous war. Reaper drones are already engaged in combat by remote control from drone bases in the U.S.

All nine were arrested, given a citation and released within an hour. The first court dates are scheduled on June 30.

Those arrested:
John Amidon, Albany, NY
Samuel Chawla-Rios, Princeton, NJ
Anthony Donovan, NYC, NY
Mark Hebert, Reno, NV
Catherine Hourcade, Sacramento, CA
Canyon Metzler, Datil, NM
Karen Pettit, Las Vegas, NV
Abby Rampone, Chicago, IL
Barbara West, Corvallis, OR
Several of the arrestees expressed their reasons for participating in the civil disobedience action.
Anthony Donovan said, “All I was thinking about my brothers and sisters in Palestine and Iran who might be being targeted from Creech that very moment.”
John Amidon, a member of Veterans For Peace, said, “I hope and pray our actions protect the young men and women serving in the military and help to prevent a land invasion of Iran.”
“I can feel my own complicity in the war economy and this is one small action I can take to say no. I felt that most of the people driving in today do not really want to kill anyone,” said Barbara West.
Nevada Desert Experience wishes to thank Veterans For Peace, Code Pink, Pax Christi, Bar Crawl Radio and the Las Vegas Catholic Worker for their participation and support for the walk.

Protesters at Creech Air Force Base criticize Iran war

Story by Glenn Puit, Las Vegas Review-Journal

Nine protesters were cited in front of Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs early Wednesday as they criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran.

Metro police said the protesters were taken into custody and issued misdemeanor citations for “protest related infractions,” then released.

“No individuals were transported to detention centers,” police said. “The protest is now over.”

Protester John Amidon was one of the nine to receive citations. Amidon, a veteran, said the Nevada Desert Experience Sacred Peace Walk involved roughly 30 people and was aimed at raising awareness of what Amidon described as an “insane” war in Iran.

“The war in Iran is an illegal war without justification and not in the best interests of American citizens,” said Amidon. “We want to do everything we possibly can to prevent boots on the ground.”

Amidon said protesters blocked a road leading to Creech, holding a banner and signs.

“We were cited and released,” Amidon said. “We were put in handcuffs. It was very professionally done. The police were very good this morning.”

Amidon said the protesters were from all across the nation and included Nevada residents.

“We are constantly getting lied to and our men and women, sons and daughters are dying, and this war is beyond the pale,” he said. “It is utterly insane and costing people all across the world.”
