Six people were arrested at a protest outside a defence industry event at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Tuesday.

Campaign groups Cardiff Stop the Arms Fair, Welsh Kurdish Activists and members of Cardiff Animal Rights were among those protesting against the Defence Procurement, Research, Technology and Exportability (DPRTE) event.

“To me nonviolence is the all-important problem or virtue to be nourished and studied and cultivated” (Dorothy Day, Diaries, Oct. 1968). And Thomas Merton agreed: “You are right going along the lines of satyagraha [Gandhi’s term for nonviolent action; literally the power of truth]. I see no other way….”  Merton held nonviolence to be essential. Nonviolent action embodies a moral truth in response to a serious moral crisis by way of protest and acts of resistance, including civil disobedience, that do no harm, conducted in openness and truth with willingness to pay the legal penalties. Nonviolent action may be acts of witness only, but they may also lead to mass mobilization and real change.

Two dozen activists arrested at Nevada nuclear test site

Members of the Pacific Life Community converged at the Las Vegas Catholic Worker house from March 2 – 4 for their annual gathering to protest nuclear weapons. Twenty-four of them were arrested on Sunday, March 4 during a nonviolent action at the Nevada nuclear test site.  
 They kicked off the weekend with an hour-long vigil on Friday afternoon, holding signs and banners in front of the nearby offices of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). [The NNSA manages eight nuclear weapons-related sites: the Y-12 nuclear complex, Pantex Plant, Nevada National Security Site (formerly known as the Nevada Test Site), Los Alamos National Lab, Livermore National Lab, Sandia National Lab, Savannah River Site and Kansas City Plant.]

Hundreds of French police smash nuclear dump protest camp, raid support house and arrest opponents

Before dawn on the morning of February 22, hundreds of French police in riot gear and equipped with trucks, bulldozers, helicopters and drones, evicted dozens of nuclear waste dump opponents who had occupied a disputed woods in the Meuse district for the last 18 months. A public relations offensive accompanied the action, vilifying opponents with images of previous clashes and supplying the media with dramatic body-camera footage from hooded police wielding chainsaws as they dismantled the protest camp. In anticipation of such police action, a recently-established support network among nuclear opponents across the country was pressed into action. That night, there were demonstrations in front of Prefecture offices in more than 70 cities across France.

As I entered my jail cell at Capitol Police Headquarters in Washington, DC, I sat down on the cold steel bench and looked around thinking – here I am again.  My eyes came to the mirror above the toilet and I noticed the word “occupy” scraped into the glass and it brought a smile to my face. I thought someone was here before me, someone who cared about the same things I cared about, someone who thought the way I thought, someone who, like me, was doing what they could to try to make the world a better place.

Arrests at Rep. Hoyer’s office pending Yemen War legislation

Seven activists were arrested on January 11th for refusing to leave Rep. Steny Hoyer’s Washington, D.C. office unless the Congressman (and House Minority Whip) committed to bring a vote on legislation to end the U.S.-Saudi war against Yemen.  Under intense bombardment and naval blockade, Yemen is poised to become the new century’s worst case of epidemic and famine, in the worst global famine year in the history of the U.N.

Attorneys Files Major New Guantanamo Lawsuits

Human rights activists, attorneys, ex-military investigators, faith leaders, and torture survivors rallied on January 11 at the White House to mark the 16th year of the operation of the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where “war on terror” detainees were first brought in 2002. Five people — Beth Adams, Ken Jones, Manijeh Saba, Helen Schietinger, and Brian Terrell — were arrested at the White House, representing the five men still held at Guantanamo despite being cleared for release by the U.S. government years ago.  The five are members of Witness Against Torture, an activist movement resisting Guantanamo and torture.

The five activists were arrested for breaching a police line outside the White House.

Four arrested during protest at Des Moines drone command center

Four Catholic Workers were arrested on December 28 at a protest that connected King Herod’s murder of young children in his quest to kill the infant Jesus with the deaths of innocent people killed by U.S. drone strikes.

The Des Moines Catholic Worker and Voices for Peace co-sponsored the Feast of Holy Innocents Faith and Resistance Retreat and Witness, which took place December 27-28 to coincide with the December 28 Feast of the Holy Innocents.
