Sixteen activists carrying words and images of Daniel Berrigan SJ arrested at Pentagon witness

Over 50 members of the Atlantic and Southern Life Communities gathered in Washington, D.C. on December 27 and 28 for a retreat and nonviolent witness at the Pentagon to commemorate the Massacre of the Holy Innocents, past and present. At the Pentagon on the morning of the 28th, with the rest of the group nearby in the “designated protest area”, sixteen of the activists blocked the sidewalk leading into the main Metro entrance.  They held life-size cut-outs of Daniel Berrigan, SJ, who died on April 30, 2016, along with banners quoting the Catonsville Nine action statement with Dan’s words:  “The violence stops here, the death stops here, the suppression of truth stops here, this war stops here.”

Pentagon workers walked onto the grass and around the blockaders.  After awhile, the police asked the sixteen of them to leave.  When they refused, they were arrested and taken to the Pentagon Police Center.  Each was charged with “disobeying a lawful order” and released with a March 2 court date.  Some of the cut-outs of Dan Berrigan were also taken into custody, but were not released – Daniel Berrigan, Presente!

“Mary” and “Joseph” arrested enacting nativity scene at Hancock drone base

On December 23, four members of Upstate Drone Action were arrested at the Hancock Reaper drone base in upstate New York.  That morning, they had set up a nativity manger scene in the road at the main entrance to Hancock base, and clad in costumes, they blockaded the road. Angels and carolers supported them from across the street. The banner spread across the large nativity scene read: “If Herod had drones, Jesus, Mary and Joseph would have been incinerated.”

John Amidon, Ed Kinane, Jules Orkin and Bev Rice were later released, each charged with trespass, two counts of disorderly conduct, and obstruction of government administration.  Their first court appearance will be in late January in DeWitt Town Court.

Drone protesters arrested while attempting citizen’s arrest of Creech AFB commander

On Thursday morning, November 10, activists blocked the main gate to Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, Nevada, impeding early morning Air Force commuter traffic. They called upon base personnel and Las Vegas police present to “stand down” or assist in the arrest of Commander Col. Case Cunningham for “Crimes Against Humanity.” Creech Air Force Base plays a central role in the U.S. drone targeted assassination program, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.

Christian Stalberg, Joseba Zulaika, Linda Sartor, Michael Kerr and Toby Blomé crossed over the boundary line of the base, holding handcuffs to carry out their citizen’s arrest.  They were immediately arrested and taken to jail in Las Vegas. All were released by the end of the day, though one was held many hours longer due to an unresolved drone protest arrest at Creech from the previous year.
